John Doerr explains at TechCrunch Disrupt what makes truly disruptive entrepreneurs. For him it all comes down to if the innovator is a missionary or a mercenary.
Missionary - driven by passion - plans for the long-term - open to strategic partnerships - focused on the value statement
Mercenary - pulled by fear - handles biz outlook on need basis (short term) - compelled by the deal - motivated by financial statements
“Everyone wants to make money and they’re lying if they tell you otherwise.”
The difference is that it’s not everything. Mega-successes like Jobs and Zuckerberg wanted to change the world. Great innovators see the bigger picture and it’s their passion that builds great companies.
